"Ruth Pettus paints portraits of men three or four times life-size. Attracting attention with images enlarged beyond all reason is one thing, holding it by the same means is quite another, for the eye grows tired, traversing areas that would be insignificant if rendered on a normal scale.
But Ms. Pettus pulls it off by painting her faces as if they were huge in reality. The dark-skinned man in sunglasses turned white by reflected light is impressive enough, but the florid-faced subject in shirt and tie is even better. Colors, many and various, are laid on with verve and they merge perfectly."
